On June 13, 2025, the Australian Government announced a significant funding commitment of approximately $77,000 USD to the Association of Disabled People of Timor-Leste (ADTL). This support aims to enhance social inclusion and empowerment initiatives for people with disabilities across Timor-Leste.

The announcement was made during the 25th ADTL meeting held in Fatuhada, Dili, where Carmeneza dos Santos Monteiro, the technical lead of Australia’s Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion Program, highlighted the importance of this funding. The $77,000 will be distributed among 11 disability organizations, each receiving $5,000 to strengthen their services. These organizations will focus on key areas such as Braille training for the visually impaired, sign language education, and programs that promote economic empowerment for people with disabilities.

This funding builds on an earlier commitment of $60,000 and reflects Australia’s ongoing dedication to supporting Timor-Leste’s disability community. Despite Timor-Leste’s ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, many challenges persist. Accessibility in schools remains limited, and there is a shortage of specialized professionals to provide adequate support. These issues highlight the critical need for continued investment in disability services and inclusive education.

Timor-Leste is home to approximately 17,061 people with disabilities, many of whom face barriers to full participation in society. The Australian Government’s support aims to address these barriers by empowering local organizations and improving access to essential training and resources.

This initiative underscores the importance of international cooperation in advancing disability rights and social inclusion. By investing in capacity-building and education, Australia and Timor-Leste are working together to create a more inclusive society where people with disabilities can thrive.
