Timor-Leste Advances Five Places in 2025 Global Peace Index

Timor-Leste has achieved significant progress in the 2025 Global Peace Index, climbing five places to 44th out of 163 countries and territories, according to the Institute for Economics and Peace report released on June 18, 2025. The country is now classified as having a "High Level of Peace," with an overall score of 1.758. This advancement highlights Timor-Leste’s strong dedication to maintaining stability, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting sustainable development.

The Global Peace Index evaluates peace based on 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators across three main areas: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflicts, and the degree of militarization. Despite a global decline in peace for the sixth consecutive year, Timor-Leste’s low levels of conflict and improvements in domestic security have helped it stand out as one of the most peaceful countries in the Asia-Pacific region, ranking 10th among 19 nations.

The government has welcomed this achievement as recognition of its ongoing efforts to foster national stability and democratic governance. Officials emphasize that the rise in ranking reflects the country’s commitment to peace, inclusive governance, and sustainable development. This positive trend serves as a hopeful example amid the broader global challenges to peace and security.

Looking ahead, Timor-Leste remains focused on sustaining this progress by continuing to invest in stability, dialogue, and good governance. The government is committed to ensuring a safe and prosperous future for all its citizens through ongoing peacebuilding and development initiatives.
