Timor-Leste Extends Border Post Operating Hours with Indonesia

On June 18, 2025, the government of Timor-Leste, under the leadership of Interior Minister Francisco Guterres, approved a resolution to extend the operating hours of its border posts with Indonesia. This change affects the border posts at Batugade, Salele, Sakato, and Oesilu. The new schedule sets the hours from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a one-hour break from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., aligning Timor-Leste’s border post hours with those of the neighboring Indonesian checkpoints at Motaain, Motamasin, Wini, and Napan.

The extension aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation and facilitate the movement of people and goods across the border. It also seeks to reinforce social, cultural, familial, and economic ties between communities on both sides. This adjustment was made in response to a proposal from Indonesian border management authorities, based on the principle of reciprocity between the two nations.

Minister Guterres emphasized that the previous limited hours often caused difficulties for many Timorese citizens who cross the border daily for work, trade, or administrative matters. By extending the hours, the government expects to provide greater flexibility for these activities, which will have a positive impact on economic activity and public services in border areas.

This change reflects ongoing efforts to improve cross-border cooperation and support the livelihoods of communities living near the border, making it easier for them to engage in economic and family-related activities without the constraints of restricted border operating times.
