Timor-Leste to Host 9th CPLP International Congress on Environmental Education in 2027
On June 11, 2025, the Timor-Leste government officially approved its candidacy to host the 9th International Congress on Environmental Education of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). The event is scheduled to take place from July 19 to 23, 2027, in the Special Administrative Region of Oecusse-Ambeno.
The congress, proposed by Minister Miguel Marques Gonçalves Manetelu—who serves as Minister of Tourism and Environment and Minister Coordinator of Economic Affairs—will serve as a vital platform for promoting environmental awareness, sharing best practices, and strengthening ecological sustainability among CPLP member states. It aims to foster multilateral cooperation and develop innovative environmental education strategies to address pressing global environmental challenges.
The Timor-Leste government has tasked the Ministry of Tourism and Environment with coordinating the preparations for the congress. This effort will involve collaboration with various national and international partners, including higher education institutions and civil society organizations specializing in environmental education.
To support the event, Timor-Leste has submitted a co-financing request of US$150,000 to the CPLP Special Fund. This contribution forms part of the estimated total budget of US$500,000, which will be supplemented by partnerships with environmental education organizations from Portuguese-speaking countries.
Hosting the congress underscores Timor-Leste’s commitment to playing an active role in promoting ecological sustainability within the CPLP community. It also highlights the country’s dedication to addressing global environmental crises through education and multilateral cooperation.
The 9th CPLP International Congress on Environmental Education is expected to enhance regional collaboration and provide a significant opportunity for Timor-Leste to showcase its environmental initiatives on an international stage.
