World Bank Approves Budget for Gleno to Letefoho Road Construction in Timor-Leste
The World Bank has recently approved the budget for the construction of the Gleno to Letefoho road in Timor-Leste, marking a significant step forward for infrastructure development in the region. This approval comes after a lengthy process, and the contract for the project is expected to be signed soon.
Samuel Marçal, the Minister of Public Works (MOP), announced the approval during a government briefing. He explained that the delay in signing the contract was due to the time needed for the World Bank to finalize its budget approval. Now that this step is complete, the government will coordinate with all relevant authorities to officially launch the project in the Ermera Municipality.
The construction of this road is crucial, as the current condition of the Letefoho road is very poor. The MOP team has already begun emergency repairs to temporarily improve the road while waiting for the full project to commence. Minister Marçal emphasized that the public might not have noticed the urgency before, but the road’s condition is severe enough to require immediate attention.
The project timeline is still being finalized, but it is expected that within one to two months, the contract will be signed, and construction will begin. The Minister also mentioned that the process involves oversight by the Court of Auditors, which may take an additional month to complete. This ensures transparency and proper management of the funds and project execution.
Once the contract is signed, the government will move quickly to implement the road construction, which is expected to bring significant benefits to the local community. Improved road infrastructure will enhance connectivity, facilitate transportation, and support economic activities in the region.
This development reflects the government’s commitment to improving public infrastructure and addressing critical needs in Timor-Leste. The collaboration with the World Bank highlights the importance of international support in achieving these goals.
